The Five Animal Freedoms

What are Animal Freedoms?

Freedom to express normal behavior by providing sufficient space, proper facilities, and company of the animal’s own kind. Animal’s need to be able to interact with — or avoid — others of their own kind as desired. They must be able to stretch every part of their body (from nose to tail), and run, jump, and play.

The Animal Welfare Act 2006

With 9.3 million dogs, 10.3 million cats, 1.1 million rabbits and many other species owned as pets in the UK, it is reassuring to know there are laws protecting their health and happiness.

The Animal Welfare Act 2006 places a legal duty of care on their owners or keepers (including rescue centres) to provide for their animal’s welfare needs.
The DEFRA Codes of Practice support the Animal Welfare Act and give owners and keepers (including rescue centres) more information on how to meet their requirements.
